Filed by: The Assistant With Thumbs (and a dangerously low coffee supply)
It’s happened, folks. The other human has packed up, hit the road, and left the home office in the capable paws of its true overlords: the dogs. With Dad away on his latest work adventure, we find ourselves staring into the abyss of solo entrepreneurship, full days of digital wizardry, and the occasional crisis involving a squeaky toy stuck under the couch.
Let us be clear: the office is now operating under new management. If you were expecting productivity metrics, revenue growth, or daily KPIs… prepare to be disappointed. What we offer instead: fur-covered inspiration, emotional support on demand, and suspiciously long nap breaks.
The Office Dynamics: A Full Overhaul
With the dad human no longer around to intercept snack demands or referee floor zoomies, we’ve seen a complete restructuring of the workplace. The roles have shifted. The energy has shifted. The vibe is… chaotic neutral with a hint of “where the hell is my other slipper?”
Current staff assignments include:
- Chief of Security: Leads daily barking sessions to alert us to falling leaves, delivery drivers, and possibly their own reflections. Schedule: unpredictable. Volume: unacceptable. Effectiveness: questionable.
- Head of HR (Howling & Requests): Handles emotional outbursts and demands for attention. Often found sighing dramatically when denied the right to sit on the keyboard.
- Lead Comfort Consultant: Specializes in curling up behind knees, under desks, or directly on your foot while you try to focus. Occasionally promotes break time by whimpering until taken outside.
- Senior Productivity Disrupter: Responsible for unplugging laptops, stepping on keyboards, barking during client calls, and stealing socks mid-Zoom. Has received multiple warnings. Zero improvement.
- Junior Morale Officers: Regularly execute full-blown wiggle-butt attacks upon reentering a room, even if the human was only gone 45 seconds.
As you can see, the team is fully engaged.
Workplace Conditions
Morale is high.
Energy is erratic.
Snacks are heavily guarded (and frequently stolen).
With only one human left to handle the duties of CEO, content creator, snack distributor, emotional laborer, tech support, and pet parent, it’s fair to say the workplace is under pressure. The coffee supply is holding (barely), and the Post-It notes have formed a kind of motivational shrine above the desk: “You can do hard things”, “Yes, this counts as progress”, and “Feed the dogs first, always.”
Despite the absence of the second human, the team is adapting. The assistant with thumbs has reported increased levels of both caffeine intake and spontaneous tears (normal and expected). Work is still getting done, but often at a slower, furrier pace.
Daily Office Schedule (as dictated by the dogs)
6:45 AM: Wake-up paw to the face. Morning briefing delivered via prolonged staring.
7:15 AM: Coffee is brewed. Staff begins patrolling the perimeter (barking at squirrels, shadows, ghosts).
8:00 AM: Admin work begins. Interruptions occur every 11 minutes.
8:22 AM: Emotional support break. Lap occupied.
9:00 AM: Morning nap rotation begins. Snoring increases.
10:30 AM: Random burst of energy. Zoomies executed. Chaos unleashed.
12:00 PM: Lunch meeting. All attendees sit two inches from the human’s plate.
1:30 PM: Productivity window. Human writes content. Dogs sleep on their feet.
3:00 PM: Afternoon walk slash energy reset.
4:00 PM: Existential crisis + treat requests.
5:30 PM: Staff assembles for the great “Where’s Dad?” vigil.
7:00 PM: Evening cuddle shift begins.
9:00 PM: End-of-day reflection period. Dogs sigh heavily. Human pretends tomorrow will be different.
Staff Observations:
- The removal of one adult human appears to have destabilized the emotional equilibrium of the group. Several staff members have become clingier than usual.
- Attempts to work on coloring books, tarot readings, and digital marketing materials have been sabotaged by head tilts and desperate cries for belly rubs.
- The team has exhibited increased interest in the inner workings of Amazon deliveries.
Facilities & Maintenance
Cleanliness remains an aspirational goal.
The office vacuum has been dodged three times this week. At least one staff member is hiding snacks in the couch cushions. The bed has been made exactly once, and only because the assistant stepped in a wet spot and needed to locate the source.
A new system of floor-treat detection has been implemented. It involves frantic sniffing and guilt-inducing eye contact.
Announcement from the CEO (Canine Executive Overlords):
We remind all humans that:
- Barking is a legitimate form of communication.
- Naps are to be respected.
- No snack is safe.
- Emotional support is available 24/7; payment required in peanut butter or cheese.
Also, we miss Dad. We do not understand his absence, only that the one remaining human is now more fragile and must be sat on at all times.
Final Notes
The office is still standing. Barely. The dogs are doing their best. The human is… trying. The work will get done. Slowly. With fur on it.
And despite the mild chaos, there’s something beautiful about this temporary return to basics: a quiet house, a messy desk, a furry coworker snoring at your feet while you type out your dreams.
We may not have a formal HR department. But we have love. Loyalty. Snacks. And coffee. So much coffee.
Until next time,
The Office Staff
(With assistance from the human, who is running solely on caffeine and vibes)
