If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to have your own personal security team, allow me to introduce you to Captain Barks-a-Lot, also known as Lagatha.
Now, I know what you’re thinking.
“Ashley, is your neighborhood dangerous?”
No.
No, it is not.
But according to Captain Barks-a-Lot, danger lurks around every corner.
This week’s list of confirmed threats included:
- A delivery truck.
- A squirrel with questionable intentions.
- A bird that clearly knew too much.
- The neighbor existing.
- My husband coming home (after she’d already seen him five minutes earlier).
- And… my personal favorite…
One rogue leaf.
Not a branch.
Not a whole tree.
One single leaf that had the audacity to blow across the yard.
Naturally, this required an immediate Code Red response.
She launched herself to the window like she was reporting for military duty, barking with such determination that I’m convinced she expected Congress to get involved.
The leaf, realizing it had been discovered, continued rolling across the yard without remorse.
Crisis unresolved.
Needless to say, she informed the entire neighborhood of this unfolding catastrophe.
I, meanwhile, thanked her for her dedicated service while quietly wondering if perhaps… just perhaps… the leaf had innocent intentions.
But that’s not how Captain Barks-a-Lot operates.
There are no harmless leaves.
Only leaves that haven’t been investigated yet.
So if you happen to drive by our house and hear enthusiastic barking, don’t panic.
Everything is under control.
Lagatha has eyes on the situation.
Even if the situation is a blade of grass moving suspiciously in the breeze.
